Heat is produced from a district heating plant that uses local wood chips as base load. Two gas boilers are installed to provide reserve capacity.
The network in Harstad has a total length of 18 kilometres and runs from Stangnes industrial area to Sama (Tine), with the Hjellholmen heating plant located roughly in the middle. Over 70 buildings are connected to the network, with the hospital as one of the largest customers. In addition, schools, Grottebadet water park, Harstadhallen sports complex, hotels, the cultural centre and industrial buildings are connected, as well as some detached houses.
Establishment of the power plant resulted in investments of NOK 200 million and has provided further ripple effects for Harstad in the form of new green jobs, local procurement of goods and services and fuel deliveries from a local company. The district heating facility was commissioned in 2012.
